The Los Angeles Dodgers have been the most aggressive team of the offseason, signing the likes of Blake Snell, Michael Conforto and Roki Sasaki. The team also recently reached agreements with Tanner Scott and Kirby Yates to further bolster their bullpen.
The Dodgers additionally re-signed Blake Treinen and Teoscar Hernández, both of whom played a key role in winning the 2024 World Series. Meanwhile, Tommy Edman received a five-year contract extension.
The Dodgers’ offseason spending has drawn criticism from fans of opposing teams and some who cover the sport. Complaints range from operating in bad faith with deferred salary to outright claims of ruining baseball.
Dodgers free agent Jack Flaherty defended the team’s offseason spending and shifted the focus onto other clubs that he believes aren’t doing enough to compete:
A certain team is not ruining baseball
A lot of other teams are just doing very little— Jack Flaherty (@jflare_) January 21, 2025
Flaherty is the second notable baseball figure in the last week to come to the support of the Dodgers amid claims that they’re ruining baseball.
Chicago Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer credited the team for being a well-run organization and that they do much more than simply outspend others for the best players.
As for Flaherty himself, he remains a free agent with less than a month until the start of Spring Training. The right-hander is coming off a season that saw him go 13-7 with a 3.17 ERA, 3.47 FIP and 1.07 WHIP in 28 starts.
Flaherty was among the Dodgers’ acquisitions at the trade deadline who helped them win the 2024 World Series. He expressed a desire to remain with L.A.’s, but that doesn’t appear likely due to the club’s surplus of starting pitching.
Jack Flaherty considering short-term contract
With Flaherty still without a team for the 2025 season, he has reportedly considered signing a short-term contract and testing free agency again next year.
