History Of Dodger Stadium Doubleheaders

Because of the MLB lockout wiping out the first week of the preliminary team schedules for the 2022 regular season, doubleheaders have become a necessity. For the Los Angeles Dodgers, it put two sets of doubleheaders at Dodger Stadium on their 2022 schedule.

Prior to Tuesday, the Dodgers had not played a doubleheader at Dodger Stadium since July 22, 1999, which came against the Colorado Rockies. That was due to a rainout from April 11 of that season. Colorado won both contests and swept the three-game series.

The Dodgers playing two games against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday also marked the first scheduled doubleheader at Dodger Stadium since Sept. 17, 1987, which was one day after Pope John Paul II held mass at the ballpark.

All-in-all, there have been only 10 doubleheader dates in the 60-year history of Dodger Stadium. The Dodgers will play an 11th later this season on Sept. 20 when they again host the Diamondbacks.
