Kiké Hernandez: Red Sox-Yankees & Dodgers-Giants Rivalries ‘Pretty Similar’

After getting to experience the rivalry between the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants for six seasons, Kiké Hernandez is now in a second year of playing heated games for the Boston Red Sox against the New York Yankees.

Hernandez and the Red Sox just snapped a two-game losing streak to begin the season at Yankee Stadium, with the series finale played in front of a national audience as part of an ESPN Sunday Night Baseball telecast.

Hernandez was mic’d up for a live interview with broadcasters during the bottom of the fourth inning, during which he successfully predicted what would have to take place if Anthony Rizzo hit a single into center field.

The conversation then shifted to rivalries and how Dodgers-Giants compares to Red Sox-Yankees.

“Pretty similar, but colder,” Hernandez quipped.

The four storied franchises have long been viewed as being responsible for the best rivalries in baseball. However, most view the Red Sox and Yankees to have more animosity on a regular basis than what’s typically seen when the Dodgers and Giants play.

What makes the history of the rivalry between the two National League West teams is it dates back to their time in Brooklyn and New York, respectively.

Giants-Dodgers rivalry

The Giants snapped the Dodgers’ reign over the NL West at eight consecutive division titles by finishing one game ahead in the standings.

After defeating the St. Louis Cardinals in the Wild Card Game, the Dodgers advanced to the NL Division Series to face the Giants in the postseason for the first time in MLB history. L.A. won the dramatic series, with Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin Scully calling Game 5 the biggest in their history.

Speaking after the Dodgers eliminated the Giants, Mookie Betts explained his belief of the Red Sox and Yankees having a different edge.

“Yankees-Red Sox, man, that’s mean. That’s different,” he said. “This is definitely different. Maybe the different coasts, East Coast people are different than West Coast. I don’t know.

“But it’s definitely a lot of fun to be a part of a rivalry like this. Just being a part of it, being able to contribute in it is just fun.”
