Magic Johnson added to his business portfolio earlier this year when he was part of a group that purchased the Washington Commanders for a record $6 billion. Johnson said after the sale that it had been a longtime dream of his to own an NFL team.
In addition to the Commanders, Johnson is a part-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Sparks and Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC). He also has ambitions of becoming an NBA owner one day, the league he shined as a five-time champion for the Los Angeles Lakers.
Johnson revealed that he turned down previous opportunities to become a part-owner of the Golden State Warriors, Detroit Pistons and Atlanta Hawks in order to avoid competing with the Lakers.
However, Johnson said he would consider buying a stake in the New York Knicks if the opportunity arises, via Brian Mahoney of the Associated Press:
“I think it would be intriguing,” Johnson said Tuesday. “The only team I would actually probably think about is the New York Knicks.”
Johnson cited the passionate Knicks fanbase as his biggest motivation for wanting to become a part-owner of the franchise:
“I think because of the way fans love basketball you might have to think about that one, because I love coming to New York and going to the Garden and watching the Knicks play,” Johnson said in an interview with The Associated Press. “I love being with fans who are so passionate about their team and the Knick fans are, and they’re smart. They’re smart basketball fans and so that one I would have to think about. I think that other than that, I would probably never think about ever being a part of another franchise.”
The Knicks are currently owned by the Madison Square Garden Sports ownership group, which is headed by executive chairman James Dolan. The group previously owned the legendary Kia Forum in Inglewood, California, before selling it to Los Angeles Clippers owner Steve Ballmer in 2020.
Johnson previously owned a share of the Lakers, but sold his 4% to Patrick Soon-Shiong in October 2010 for an estimated $27 million.
Magic Johnson acquired Metaverse teams in SimWin Sports
In addition to owning several professional sports teams, Johnson recently acquired new football and basketball franchises in SimWin Sports, the world’s premier digital sports league.
SimWin Sports is the first professional sports league where the teams are owned by sports legends, celebrities and investors. Virtual teams and athletes compete 24 hours a day to fuel on-demand fantasy sports contests.
