Dodgers Injury Updates: J.D. Martinez, Shelby Miller, Blake Treinen, Daniel Hudson & Jonny DeLuca

The Los Angeles Dodgers lost Tony Gonsolin for the remainder of the season and likely all of 2024 as well due to his forthcoming Tommy John surgery, but they remain hopeful to welcome back the likes of Walker Buehler, J.D. Martinez and Shelby Miller at some point down the stretch.

Blake Treinen is in that category as well, but Dodgers manager Dave Roberts recently said the veteran reliever faces long odds of pitching for the team despite moving his rehab assignment to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Treinen joined Shelby Miller at OKC, where Jonny DeLuca also has started his own rehab assignment as well.

Meanwhile, Martinez returned from Camelback Ranch and is with the Dodgers during their homestand.

J.D. Martinez update

After the Dodgers placed Martinez on the 10-day injured list due to left groin tightness, Roberts said he was going to spend at least one week without swinging a bat. That stretch has passed, and the Dodgers’ designated hitter is poised to begin the process of returning.

“He is using his med ball for movements and simulated swinging. He’ll take swings [Tuesday], so I think right now it’s been 10 days without swinging a bat,” Roberts said.

“He’s in a good place physically and I would expect him to feel good moving around with the med ball, and hopefully he keeps getting better. Then we’ll just do the hitting progression and hopefully at some point next road trip he’ll join us.”

Martinez is not expected to join a Minor League affiliate for a rehab assignment prior to being activated.

Shelby Miller

Miller started in three games for the Arizona Complex League (ACL) Dodgers at the beginning of his rehab assignment and has since made five appearances for Oklahoma City.

“Shelby was good [Sunday],” Roberts said. “I think it wouldn’t be surprising to see him at some point in time this homestand.”

Blake Treinen

Treinen started his rehab assignment with the ACL team on August 22 and pitched again four days later with Oklahoma City. Treinen hit a batter but worked a scoreless inning in his Triple-A game, but a second appearance with OKC did not yield positive results.

“I think we’re still a ways from Blake,” Roberts reiterated.

Daniel Hudson

Daniel Hudson has been recovering from a sprained MCL in his right knee at Camelback Ranch, but is expected to make his way to Los Angeles this week.

However, Roberts said Hudson has not yet been able to throw off a mound.

Jonny DeLuca

DeLuca has been on the 10-day IL with a right hamstring strain since July 26. He’s played in four rehab games with OKC thus far, but Roberts said he wasn’t sure of a timetable.

The 25-year-old doesn’t appear likely to join the Dodgers unless there is an injury, given their trades for Kiké Hernández and Amed Rosario.
