The Los Angeles Dodgers concluded their homestand and short series against the Colorado Rockies without Miguel Vargas and Miguel Rojas in the lineup due to minor injuries.
Vargas was hit by a pitch in his right thumb during the seventh inning on Monday night but remained in the game after being checked on by Dodgers manager Dave Roberts and a trainer. Vargas struck out in his next at-bat but wasn’t tested in the field over the final two innings.
“His thumb is fine,” Roberts said after the Dodgers’ 13-4 win. “We’ll get it looked at [Tuesday]. He said it was sore, but full range of motion, there’s strength. I think [Tuesday], the next day, we’ll know more.
“He was adamant about staying in the game.”
Vargas took grounders at second base prior to the finale against the Rockies but didn’t appear in the game.
“He’s doing OK. There was still some soreness, tenderness. He can hit, take an at-bat. But right now, throwing affects him, So given tomorrow’s off day, hopefully with two days of rest, we can get him back in there on Thursday, but still pretty benign.”
To Roberts’ knowledge, Vargas still had not had an X-ray on his right thumb.
“We just felt that he didn’t need them and there was mild, mild inflammation,” Roberts added. “And it’s the thumb, so it’s not something where we felt an image is going to change anything. It’s going to be more toward per his tolerance.”
Meanwhile, Rojas has missed two consecutive games due to groin tightness that stemmed from an attempt at an unassisted double play.
“So swinging the bat, as he did [Tuesday] in live batting practice was good. But again, given the off day, the hope is that he’ll be in there on Friday. It’s just too early to push him, especially that part of the body.”
How Dodgers are filling in for Miguel Vargas
Mookie Betts started at second base on Tuesday night and Roberts said he would continue to do so should Vargas miss more games.
Roberts does not anticipate Rojas or Vargas going on the 10-day injured list.
