Dodgers Expect Tommy Edman To Begin Rehab Assignment Next Week

The Los Angeles Dodgers have been without Tommy Edman all season, but could see their projected starting second baseman return in the near future.

The 31-year-old has been dealing with lingering right ankle soreness, but was seen running the bases at Petco Park on Monday and is expected to begin a rehab assignment next week.

“I think as we go out to Milwaukee, I think he is on his way to Phoenix to start taking some at-bats at the Arizona facility,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts began. “And then the plan is for him to go out somewhere. I’m not sure where, though. I think that would be next week.”

The Dodgers transferred Edman to the 60-day injured list on May 9. At the time, the seven-year veteran was dealing with lingering soreness from offseason right ankle surgery. The move did not impact Edman’s projected timeline to return in late May or early June, but allowed the Dodgers to add Charlie Barnes to their 40-man roster.

Edman isn’t eligible to be activated until Sunday, but the minor setback he experienced has slightly delayed his timeline anyway.

At the moment, there is no information on where he will be assigned or how long it will be before he is activated.

Edman can continue to play a utility role once he returns, but he likely takes most of his games at second base. The combination of Miguel Rojas, Alex Freeland, Hyeseong Kim and Santiago Espinal has filled in adequately as a bridge to Edman.

Dodgers don’t have timeline for Blake Snell after successful surgery

While the Dodgers have one player heading toward a return to the active roster, they have another headed the opposite way, back to the injured list.

Blake Snell’s time back in L.A.’s rotation lasted one start, as he was placed back on the injured list retroactive to May 12.

Snell was placed on the 15-day IL to address loose bodies in his left elbow. The left-hander underwent a successful nanoneedle surgery on Tuesday, but the team does not have a concrete timeline for his return.

What the organization does know for certain is Snell’s recovery window will be reduced from the initial estimates. Typically, surgery to remove loose bodies requires two to three months of recovery, but the Dodgers expect the NanoScope procedure to reduce that to some degree.
