The Los Angeles Dodgers have been without Tyler Glasnow in their rotation since July 9, but he is set to return on Wednesday against the San Francisco Giants.
Glasnow has been on the 15-day injured list due to lower back tightness, but it was never a major concern for him or the Dodgers.
“Yeah, it’s just like ‘tall guy back’ when you just get like a little twinge,” Glasnow explained. “And then it was just with the break coming up, I think they thought it was a good idea to just take a little time, but I feel good now.”
Fortunately for the Dodgers, Glasnow explained his back tightness was minor and cleared up quickly, roughly a few days after he first started experiencing it.
Had the All-Star break not been on the horizon when he first suffered the injury, Glasnow said he would have tried to avoid the IL.
“I would try not to. I don’t know what they would think about it,” Glasnow said. “I don’t know, I don’t know. I’m just glad it’s feeling better.”
Glasnow threw a simulated game at Dodger Stadium on Friday of roughly 60 pitches. He faced Jason Heyward, Gavin Lux, James Outman and Minor Leaguer Jefferson Valladares.
“Really good,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “Velocity was good, the stuff was great. Lot of swing and miss. He said he felt good, back was good.”
Roberts also confirmed Glasnow will join the Dodgers rotation next week as long as nothing comes up between now and then. But for the meantime, the simulated game was an encouraging step.
“I feel good,” Glasnow said. “The time off was good, and then was out there today and everything felt sharp.”
Time off beneficial for Tyler Glasnow
Glasnow has thrown 109 innings this season, which is the third-highest total of his career.
He set a career high with 120 innings pitched for the Tampa Bay Rays last season and has otherwise surpassed 100 just one other time — in 2018 — with 111.2.
Glasnow is now on track to shatter his career high in innings pitched, and because of that, he feels the extra time off can be beneficial for him.
“Probably can’t hurt,” Glasnow said. “I think I was feeling good. I was confident either way that I was going to be able to throw a lot of innings, but it’s definitely helpful.”
