Tyler Anderson Hoping For Andrew Heaney’s Quick Return To Dodgers Rotation

The Los Angeles Dodgers beginning the 2022 regular season with a surplus of starting pitchers led to David Price again filling a bullpen role, and Tyler Anderson joining him.

Whereas Price gained experience pitching in relief for the Dodgers last year, it marked a first for Anderson since 2017. Since signing a one-year contract during Spring Training, Anderson has voiced a willingness to pitch in any role for L.A.

He excelled in piggyback scenarios with Tony Gonsolin for two relief appearances, but Saturday brought his first start with the Dodgers due to Heaney being placed on the 10-day injured list because of left shoulder discomfort.

While Anderson has essentially been a starter his entire career, the 32-year-old is hopeful to see Heaney back in the Dodgers rotation, via SportsNet LA:

“I think as of right now, but hopefully Heaney is back sooner than later. We’ll have to figure out if we throw in a sixth man every once in a while, or out of the ‘pen. For me, it doesn’t really matter. I think I’m going to do whatever I can to try to help us win.”

Anderson wasn’t overly sharp in his start, allowing two runs over 4.2 innings. Anderson’s lack of command led to issuing three walks — his first of the season. He exited with runners on first and second base, which were stranded by Phil Bickford.

The Dodgers have not given a timetable for Heaney’s return, but it’s presumed he may miss another turn in the rotation. Manager Dave Roberts did say the team doesn’t believe Heaney’s shoulder trouble to be a long-term concern.

Anderson focused on contributing

After a second time pitching in relief of Gonsolin and prior to Heaney’s injury, Anderson emphasized his sole focus is on helping the Dodgers.

“I knew that was going to be part of it coming in. In spring we had a set rotation and we have more starters that are injured and will probably be ready later in the season,” he said last week.

“I just want to be part of a team that I think is going to win. I’ll have a chance to go out at some point and probably start, and sometimes I’ll be out of the ‘pen. Just try to do whatever I can to help us win on any night.”
