Tony Gonsolin & Bullpen Game Among Options Dodgers Considering For Giants Series Finale

Having jockeyed for first place in the National League West standings through the first month of the regular season, the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants meet Tuesday for the start of a two-game series at Dodger Stadium.

The Giants have Carlos Rodón and Alex Wood listed as the starters for the short series, while Julio Urías in the series opener is the lone Dodgers probable thus far. Wednesday represents Tony Gonsolin’s turn in the rotation, and he’s among the options under consideration.

One presumably figures to be Tyler Anderson, and Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said the team is mulling over a bullpen game as well. L.A. proved adept at relying on a stable of relief pitchers last season as injuries mounted, and the group has been stout again in 2022.

A bullpen game on Wednesday would be the Dodgers’ first this season.

Urías is 1-1 with a 2.50 ERA and 4.33 FIP through four starts. He’s pitched well since a shaky 2022 debut and went six innings with just one run allowed. However, Urías came away from the outing disappointed by issuing two walks.

Urías went 2-1 with 3.38 ERA over five starts against the Giants last season. He flirted with a perfect game during a start at Oracle Park.

While not a guaranteed predictor for future results, Gonsolin allowed three runs on five hits and issued four walks over 3.1 innings his only time facing the Giants last year.

Dodgers pitching staff

With new MLB roster rules going into effect for May 2-29, the Dodgers plan on carrying the maximum 14 pitchers permitted. They have been at 16 pitchers for most of the season thus far.

Beginning May 30, teams will be capped at carrying 13 pitchers on their active rosters.

Still having extra pitchers available for the next four weeks along with off days on Monday and Thursday further lends to the possibility of a bullpen game for the Giants series finale.

However, Anderson could just as well take the ball on normal rest.
