Tommy Edman Potentially Going On Dodgers’ Injured List

UPDATE (May 3, 9 a.m. PT): The Los Angeles Dodgers are going to place Tommy Edman on the 10-day injured list and recall Hyeseong Kim from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Tommy Edman has been an extremely valuable chess piece for the Los Angeles Dodgers this season, appearing in 30 of their 32 games so far.

Edman was not in the lineup on Monday night for the first time this season but entered off the bench and later delivered a walk-off single in the 10th inning. But Edman then didn’t play in the last game of the Dodgers’ homestand or to begin their road trip on Friday night.

Edman did go through a workout at Truist Park, which included fielding ground balls, hitting the batting cage and some running.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said it’s possible Edman will need to go on the injured list, but such a decision won’t be made until evaluating his condition from the workout, as seen on SportsNet LA:

“I think it’s a day-to-day thing. I don’t want to put us or him in a position where there’s much expectation (to return Saturday). I think that should just be driven on how he’s feeling. I don’t even know his availability tonight. My expectation is he’d be available off the bench to pinch-hit. But as far as starting tomorrow, I guess we’ll see how today goes.”

Roberts had previously indicated he was “certain” that Edman would be in the lineup by Saturday’s game against the Atlanta Braves even if he missed the series opener.

The Dodgers nevertheless will err on the side of caution, particularly with it being the same right ankle Edman sprained on a rehab assignment last season while recovering from wrist injury.

The latest right ankle issue isn’t nearly as severe, which Edman suffered while sliding into second base in the sixth inning on Tuesday.

Dodgers’ options to fill in for Tommy Edman

If Edman does in fact go on the 10-day injured list, Miguel Rojas and Kiké Hernández have each received starts at second base in his absence. Rojas has made eight appearances (six starts) at second base this season, while Hernández has made seven appearances (four starts).

Hernández has been the more effective option against left-handers this season with a .435 slugging percentage compared to .167 for Rojas. Rojas has been the better option against right-handed pitching.

In terms of filling the open roster spot, the Dodgers are expected to recall Hyeseong Kim from Triple-A Oklahoma City.
