This Day In Dodgers History: Multiple Rainouts At Dodger Stadium; Leo Durocher Returns

On April 21, 1967, the Los Angeles Dodgers’ scheduled game against the St. Louis Cardinals was postponed due to rain, snapping a streak of 410 consecutive contests at Dodger Stadium without a washout since it opened in 1962.

Exactly 21 years later, the Dodgers suffered another rainout on April 21, this time against the San Diego Padres during the 1988 season. L.A.’s previous two scheduled matchups against San Diego were postponed due to rain as well.

All-in-all, there have been 17 rainouts in the 60-year history of Dodger Stadium. Nine of those rainouts occurred in April, including the last five. Moreover, six of the rainouts have been against the Padres.

The most recent rainout at Dodger Stadium happened on April 17, 2000 against the Houston Astros. From that date to 2018, the Dodgers played 1,471 consecutive home games without a rainout, which is the longest streak in MLB history.

When was the last rain delay at Dodger Stadium?

The most recent rain delay at Dodger Stadium was April 13, 2024, when first pitch was pushed back two hours and 15 minutes due to inclement weather.

Prior to that, the Dodgers also had a rain delay at Dodger Stadium during their game on March 30. It occurred after the fourth inning and lasted just 35 minutes.

Before the 2024 season, there hadn’t been a rain delay at Dodger Stadium since April 7, 2015, against the Padres. It was the first rain delay at Chavez Ravine since May 23, 2008.

The game began 49 minutes after the scheduled start time. Zack Greinke started for the Dodgers against Tyson Ross in a matchup of All-Star pitchers.

Of course, the Dodgers have been part of several rain delays or postponed games while on the road due to inclement weather.

Brooklyn manager Leo Durocher returns from suspension

Also on this day in Dodgers history, Brooklyn manager Leo Durocher returned from a one-year suspension. Durocher had been punished by commissioner Happy Chandler for various actions deemed detrimental to baseball.

The Dodgers suffered a 9-5 loss to the New York Giants in Durocher’s return to the dugout.
