Spring Training Recap: Gavin Lux, Miguel Vargas & James Outman Shine In Dodgers’ Split-Squad Win Against Brewers

The Los Angeles Dodgers were in split-squad action Saturday for the first — and only time — of Spring Training this year, and it was a successful day as they swept both games against National League Central opponents.

One of which was a comfortable 11-3 win over the Milwaukee Brewers at American Family Fields of Phoenix. Multiple regulars were in the Dodgers lineup for their road game, and the majority of them contributed.

Gavin Lux went xx-for-xx out of the leadoff spot and tied with James Outman and Miguel Vargas for the game high in hits. Chris Taylor was just 1-for-4 but his RBI double gave the Dodgers a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Taylor later scored on Austin Barnes’ groundout.

Lux hit an RBI single in the second inning and the Dodgers proceeded to break the game open in the fourth. That began with Miguel Vargas hitting his first home run of the spring, and James Outman’s three-run blast put the Dodgers up 7-1.

Vargas and Outman each finished a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.

Then in the seventh inning, Barnes scored on a wild pitch and Kevin Padlo hit a three-run homer.

On the pitching side, the Dodgers largely held the Brewers offense in check.

Kyle Hurt allowed just one hit and collected a pair of strikeouts over two scoreless innings in his second Spring Training start this year. Although Hurt made his MLB debut out of the bullpen last season, the Dodgers are stretching him out as a starter.

Joe Kelly completed a scoreless inning in a bit of a bounce-back effort. Kelly was hurt by some sloppy defense behind him en route to allowing two runs in his 2024 Spring Training debut earlier in the week.

Dodgers off day approaching

The Dodgers face the Colorado Rockies at Camelback Ranch on Sunday before then having their first Spring Training off day. It’s also the only day the Dodgers don’t have a Cactus League game before departing for South Korea to play exhibition games leading into the Seoul Series for Opening Day of the 2024 season.
