Spring Training Preview: Dodgers Host Angels As Clayton Kershaw Makes 2023 Debut

Following a slim loss to the Oakland Athletics, the Los Angeles Dodgers return to Camelback Ranch to host the Los Angeles Angels in the first of consecutive sold-out home games.

After taking himself out of World Baseball Classic play for Team USA, Clayton Kershaw is on thn mound for the Dodgers in his first Cactus League start of the year.

Once Kershaw withdrew from the WBC, the Dodgers scaled back his throwing progression. Kershaw resumed with bullpen sessions before throwing live batting practice against Mookie Betts, Will Smith and more teammates. The left-hander then started against players from the Chicago White Sox organization in a B game this past Sunday.

Kershaw is expected to pitch four innings in his 2023 debut.

Andre Jackson is scheduled to appear against the Angels as well and the Dodgers have several Minor Leaguers eligible to play. Jackson has five strikeouts in three scoreless innings over two games thus far.

The Angels counter with Reid Detmers for his third spring start. The left-hander has totaled 4.1 innings with a 2.08 ERA and 0.92 WHIP in 2023 Cactus League play.

Just allowing one earned run so far this spring, Detmers collected a 3.77 ERA across 25 starts last season, including most notably a no-hitter against the Tampa Bay Rays on May 10.

The Dodgers lineup looks to get their production going after collecting six hits but no runs in Thursday’s loss to the A’s.

Miguel Rojas is batting lead off and he’s followed by Chris Taylor, Max Muncy and J.D. Martinez. Miguel Vargas, who was just cleared to begin swinging in games, is fifth in the Dodgers lineup.
