The Los Angeles Dodgers need to wait out yet another rain delay this season and exhaust their entire bullpen after Tanner Scott’s blown save, but still managed to start their road trip with a 7-5 win over the New York Mets in 13 innings.
The game began on time despite a steady rain falling, though that proved to be futile. Clayton Kershaw pitched two hitless innings before his start was cut short because the game was paused during the top of the third inning.
Kershaw entered the night 11-0 with a 2.03 ERA and 123 strikeouts in 17 career regular season starts against the Mets. He was 4-0 with a 1.85 ERA in eight starts at Citi Field, but hadn’t pitched there since 2022.
The rain delay lasted one hour and 38 minutes. Mets starter Griffin Canning also was removed from the game once play resumed.
The Dodgers took immediate advantage as Will Smith’s RBI infield single with the bases loaded gave them a 1-0 lead. Teoscar Hernández, who is looking to round into form since coming off the 10-day injured list, followed with a two-run base hit.
Matt Sauer gave up a solo home run in the bottom of the third and was hurt by an error on Max Muncy in the fourth inning. Muncy’s poor throw to first base allowed Starling Marte to reach second base with no outs.
Later in the inning, Muncy was called for obstruction on a fly ball to right field that appeared to be an inning-ending double play when Hernández threw out Marte at home plate. Third base umpire Tripp Gibson ruled Muncy got in the way of Marte’s vision and thus called obstruction.
It initially was ruled a second error of the game on Muncy, but later changed to a Type 2 fielder’s instruction and thus deemed a sacrifice fly and unearned run.
Muncy did atone for his mishaps the following inning as he extended the Dodgers’ lead with an RBI single. Andy Pages followed suit to put the Dodgers ahead 5-2.
Dodgers-Mets extra innings
After Sauer pitched three innings, the Dodgers turned to Ben Casparius and Scott in effort to finish out the game. Casparius had six strikeouts over three scoreless innings as he continues to fill a versatile role out of the bullpen.
Scott’s appearance was his third in the last four days, and he blew the save opportunity by allowing three runs in the ninth inning.
The Dodgers and Mets then improbably went without scoring for three innings as the teams traded one missed opportunity after another.
Hernández put an end to the drought with a leadoff RBI double in the 13th inning. Pages brought in a crucial second run on his sacrifice fly.
