On a night where the offense was slow to get in gear, the Los Angeles Dodgers’ four-game winning streak ended as their pitching struggled in a 7-3 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Gavin Stone did not turn in his best outing, but he still managed to give the Dodgers some length despite running into trouble and battling throughout his night.
Stone pitched six innings, giving up four runs on eight hits with five strikeouts to one walk. It was his first outing since April 20, when he allowed more than one run (four starts between), and his first start since April 7, when he gave up more than two runs.
However, it was the fifth consecutive outing in which he pitched at least six innings. He now has a 3.60 ERA in 50 innings, 34 strikeouts, and a 1.30 WHIP.
The Diamondbacks got on the board first with a single from Eugenio Suarez that scored Lourdes Gurriel Jr. following a pair of singles. Another single from Gabriel Moreno gave the D-Backs four consecutive hits and a two-run lead before Stone escaped with a double play.
Shohei Ohtani had the first Dodgers’ game hit against Brandon Pfaadt, doubling into left field. He then stole third base and scored on an errant throw from Moreno behind the plate, cutting their lead in half. Ohtani went 2 for four on the night, increasing his league-leading average to .356.
However, the Diamondbacks added that run back in the next inning when Kevin Newman singled, and Corbin Carrol doubled, followed by a Ketel Marte RBI groundout. In the sixth, the Snakes added another on a solo homer from Christian Walker, who has continued to give the Dodgers troubles over his career.
The Dodgers rallied in the bottom half of the inning, cutting the D-Backs lead to just one run. Miguel Vargas started them off with a double, scoring on a single from Ohtani.
Will Smith doubled home Ohtani with a double, making it a 4-3 game.
The game wasn’t close for long as Michael Grove took over for Stone and quickly ran into trouble. A leadoff walk and a base hit set the stage for Joc Pederson, who came through for his club with a home run, putting the D-Backs up 7-3.
Yohan Ramírez makes Dodgers debut
One small bright spot in the game was Yohan Ramírez’s Dodgers debut. He pitched two scoreless innings, allowing two hits, no walks, and no strikeouts. The Dodgers acquired Ramírez from the New York Mets in exchange for cash, as announced by both teams. Five days ago, New York designated Ramirez for assignment. Since Ramirez had no minor league options left, he immediately joined the Dodgers’ major league bullpen on Monday.
