Entering his eighth season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Max Muncy has appeared on The Shredder rankings of the Top-10 Third Baseman Right now for the third year in a row.
Coming in at No. 8 among the best third baseman in baseball heading into the 2025 season, it is Muncy’s seventh consecutive time being ranked as one of the 10 best players at a position since he joined the Dodgers in 2018.
Before making the switch to third base after the Dodgers signed Freddie Freeman, Muncy was ranked a top-five first baseman every season from 2019-2022. Meaning, he has graded out as a valuable piece of the Dodgers roster every year following his breakout 2018 campaign.
For third base, Muncy has held the same spot on this list for three years now as he previously earned No. 8 rankings in 2023 and 2024 as well.
MLB Network host Brian Kenny ranked Muncy seventh on his list for this season, and he appeared 10th on lists by Mike Lowell and Susan Slusser. Muncy was not ranked by any analysts among the best third basemen right now for 2024.
The Shredder had Cleveland Guardians All-Star José Ramírez as the No. 1 third baseman heading into 2025, which Kenny and Lowell were in agreement with. Slusser was the only exception, having San Francisco Giants third baseman Matt Chapman at No. 1 and Ramírez ranked second.
At 34 years old, Muncy is the oldest player on this year’s third base list. It remains to be seen how his body holds up down the stretch after being limited to just 73 games in 2024 because of a prolonged oblique injury and rib issue, but on the field he showed little signs of slowing down.
After a couple of down years the past two seasons, 2024 was somewhat a return to form for Muncy as he hit .232/.358/.494 with 17 doubles, 15 home runs and 48 RBI. His .494 slugging percentage would have been 19th-best among all hitters if Muncy qualified, and his .852 on-base plus slugging percentage would have ranked 17th overall.
