The Dodgers made the captivating move to acquire Yasmani Grandal from the San Diego Padres, giving the organization one of their more intriguing backstops. He hit .228/.339/.477 with 27 home runs, 14 doubles and 72 RBIs last season.
Grandal did set a career high with 116 strikeouts, but also drew 64 walks, which was one off tying a career-best mark. He used the offseason to address his right-handed swing, which was affected by a previous shoulder injury.
Grandal was ranked a top-10 catcher by ESPN and MLB Network’s the Shredder heading into the 2017 season. He also is ranked a top-10 player at his position in the virtual world, earning an 82 rating that’s good for eighth-best.
Buster Posey was once again ranked the top catcher in baseball, although his rating fell from 94 to 92. Jonathan Lucroy’s (87) impactful 2016 season moved him seventh on the list all the way up to second, while Wilson Ramos, Yadier Molina, Salvador Perez and Gary Sanchez all followed on the list with an 84 rating.
Russell Martin (83), Devin Mesoraco (82) and Matt Weiters (81) finish out the top 10 catchers on the list, with many of the catchers retaining their standing from the 2016 game.
