Spring Training Recap: Giants Breeze Past Dodgers, Who Are Swept In Split-Squad Games

The Los Angeles Dodgers hosted the San Francisco Giants as part of a split-squad doubleheader Saturday afternoon, and unlike the Cactus League Opener when the Dodgers exploded for 13 runs, their bats stayed cold.

The Giants, on the other hand, were able to string some runs together and came away with a 9-3 victory at Camelback Ranch.

Ross Stripling started for the Dodgers and got into some trouble early, giving up a leadoff triple to Gregor Blanco. He was able to escape without allowing a run though as he struck out the next two batters and then got a fly out to end the inning.

Stripling was done after just one inning, throwing 10 pitches. After Brian Schlitter threw a scoreless second inning for the Dodgers, non-roster invitee Manny Bañuelos was not able to escape trouble in his second inning of work.

He allowed three straight hits with two outs, leading to four runs scoring and San Francisco taking a 4-0 lead in the fourth inning.

The Dodgers finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth, as Kyle Farmer hit a one-out single and Max Muncy drove him home on the Dodgers’ first triple of the spring. Joc Pederson was in position to further cut into the Giants’ lead but he struck out with runners at the corners.

Things got out of hand a bit for the Dodgers in the top of the sixth as Guillermo Moscoso gave up a leadoff single, which was followed a Mac Williamson towering two-run home run to left field, extending the Giants’ lead to 7-1.

Dodgers outfield prospect DJ Peters showed what he can do with a bat in the bottom of the seventh, hitting a single up the middle to score Edwin Rios and cut the deficit to 7-2.

Former Dodgers Minor Leaguer Kyle Jensen added two more runs for good measure in the top of the eighth, clubbing a two-run home run to left field off Dylan Baker. Although the game was well in hand, Johan Mieses cashed in Rios’ leadoff double in the bottom of the ninth with a double of his own.
