Dodgers Prospect James Outman Focused On Being ‘Best Player That I Can Be’ Rather Than Potential Role

James Outman was among the prospects who made their MLB debut with the Los Angeles Dodgers last season, and he certainly made the most of a limited opportunity.

After tearing the cover off the ball in the Minors, Outman joined the big league club at the end of July, and he promptly went 3-for-4 with a double, home run and three RBI in his first game against the Colorado Rockies.

Outman appeared in four contests and collected six hits in 13 at-bats before being sent back down to Triple-A Oklahoma City. He appeared at both corner outfield spots while with the Dodgers and also has the capability to play center field.

President of baseball operations Andrew Friedman previously mentioned Outman as a possibility to replace Cody Bellinger at the position next season. During an appearance on “Dodger Talk” with David Vassegh of AM 570 L.A. Sports, the 25-year-old explained he isn’t focused on winning the job and simply wants to improve as a player:

“Not really. Offseason, I’m just trying to get better. I’m trying to get stronger and faster, and I’m just trying to treat everything the same. I don’t want to focus on what’s out of my control. I’m just trying to be the best player that I can be.”

Along with Outman, Chris Taylor and Trayce Thompson were named by Friedman as options to replace Bellinger as the Dodgers’ primary center fielder in 2023. Taylor could see extended playing time in the outfield following the team’s acquisition of Miguel Rojas.

The Dodgers also could give a look to veterans Steven Duggar and Jason Heyward, who were signed to Minor League contracts this offseason. L.A. additionally remains linked to several center fielders on the trade market, including Dylan Carlson, Jarred Kelenic, Bryan Reynolds and Alex Thomas.

Dodgers believe James Outman is ‘ready’ for challenge of being on Opening Day roster

After impressing in a small sample size, the Dodgers reportedly believe Outman is ready for an extended look and likely will include him on their 2023 Opening Day roster.

While it seems like a good bet that Outman will break Spring Training with the team, he could potentially begin the year in Oklahoma City if another outfielder is acquired. That would allow Outman to get everyday at-bats and stay fresh ahead of a potential midseason call-up to L.A.
