Spring Training Preview: Dustin May Starts As Dodgers Face Rockies

Looking to get back in the win column, the Los Angeles Dodgers travel to Salt River Fields for their second and final matchup of the spring against the Colorado Rockies. L.A. previously defeated Colorado in blowout fashion on March 1.

Dustin May makes his first start of Cactus League play and second overall appearance. It’s his first time on the mound since tossing two scoreless innings out of the bullpen against the San Francisco Giants on March 2.

Despite having not pitched in a Major League game in almost two weeks, May kept active by pitching in a “B” game on a backfield at Camelback Ranch. The purpose was to iron out some issues with mechanics.

“I was just kind of falling down the mound instead of driving down the mound,” May explained. “So just being able to stay on my back leg and get the force towards home that I need to.”

May remains among the candidates the Dodgers are considering to round out their starting rotation for the regular season. Even if he does not earn one of the five spots, he could still make the Opening Day roster as a reliever.

The Rockies counter with Jose Mujica, who makes his second appearance of the spring. He last pitched on March 9 when he tossed a 1-2-3 inning against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Mujica made two appearances for the Rockies during the shortened 2020 season, allowing seven runs (six earned) on 10 hits in 4.1 innings of work. He allowed two home runs, issued two walks and struck out one batter.

The Dodgers have several regulars in their lineup, including Mookie Betts and Corey Seager again at the top, followed by Justin Turner and Max Muncy.
