Recap: Mookie Betts, Max Muncy Power Dodgers In Comeback Win Against Padres

The Los Angeles Dodgers squandered several opportunities early but received home runs from Mookie Betts and Max Muncy in a 6-1 comeback win against the San Diego Padres.

Nick Martinez walked five batters through four innings but still was pitching with a 1-0 lead. That changed when Betts led off the fifth with a solo home run that reached the second deck in left field. The homer was Betts’ first of the season and traveled an estimated 420 feet.

Martinez ran into more trouble when Muncy’s solo blast with two outs in the fifth inning provided L.A. with their decided lead.

Up to that point the Dodgers had stranded six runners on base and gone 0-for-3 with men in scoring position, which included leaving the bases loaded.

L.A. added to their lead in the seventh inning behind Muncy’s two-run single with the bases loaded and a Justin Turner sacrifice fly, and Betts clubbed a second solo home run in the ninth. The multi-homer game was Betts’ 20th of his career and fourth with the Dodgers.

Freddie Freeman quietly went 2-for-4 with one walk and a run scored. Freeman has reached base at least three times in six of 13 games this season.

Julio Urías did his part in protecting the initial lead by getting through five innings. He struggled some in the second and was also hurt by Trea Turner failing to get a clean grip on the baseball after fielding a chopper.

The potential inning-ending double play instead resulted in a force out that allowed a run to score.

Urías settled back in and proceeded to retire eight of the final nine batters faced. He collected back-to-back strikeouts at one point and got his fastball velocity up to 94 mph on multiple occasions.

Daniel Hudson, Evan Phillips, Phil Bickford, Alex Vesia and David Price combined to throw four scoreless innings out of the bullpen. That was all the more notable in that the group is now without Blake Treinen, who was placed on the 10-day injured list due to right shoulder discomfort.

Phillips worked a 1-2-3 seventh inning and has now retired 16 batters in a row.

Dodgers winning streak vs. Padres

The Dodgers have a 10-game winning streak against the Padres, which is a stretch that dates back to the 2021 season. L.A. additionally has won four in a row at Petco Park.
