With the start of Spring Training inching closer by the day, the Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers reportedly remain engaged in Mookie Betts trade talks. The San Diego Padres are also believed to be in the mix to acquire the All-Star outfielder.

Betts is the type of elite talent the Dodgers have sought during the offseason, and a trade with the Red Sox could also be expanded to include David Price. Though, Boston and L.A. reportedly are in disagreement over who would cover the bulk of Price’s remaining salary.

Nevertheless, the Red Sox are thought to be nearing a resolution on the Betts front. It’s widely believed that will lead to a trade with the Dodgers.

Amid a report L.A. would part with Alex Verdugo and Jeter Downs, among others, that was refuted by Rob Bradford of WEEI.com:

Two sources familiar with the Betts negotiations say the 'consensus deal' isn't realistic at this time https://t.co/51VKvRXCcy

On the surface, Verdugo certainly fits the bill as a player who may be included in a trade. The Red Sox are said to seek a Major League outfielder, and the 23-year-old certainly has trade value.

Verdugo has been part of trade rumors on multiple occasions during his young career, including in December 2018 as part of negotiations with the Cleveland Indians and as the subject of interest from the Detroit Tigers.

Joc Pederson is another established outfielder, though he’s due to become a free agent after this season and there’s yet to be any indication he’s been included in trade talks with the Red Sox.

Meanwhile, Downs is the caliber of prospect the Dodgers would need to part with if they hope to retain Gavin Lux and Dustin May.

For the Dodgers, they potentially face a scenario where they either include multiple top prospects in a Betts trade, or assume the majority of Price’s salary. Negotiations have been said to include scenarios with and without Price, but Boston appears motivated to get under the luxury tax threshold.
