Mookie Betts: Freddie Freeman Has ‘Fire That’s Lit Within Him’

Since signing a six-year, $162 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers prior to the 2022 season, Freddie Freeman has maintained his status as one of the best hitters in all of baseball.

The eight-time All-Star has been instrumental to the Dodgers’ success in recent years and also provides additional value with his leadership behind the scenes.

Freeman has long been one of the most respected voices in the league and younger players tend to flock to him for advice.

What most don’t know about Freeman is that he has a fiery competitive side, which Mookie Betts discussed during an appearance on “ALL THE SMOKE:”

“What you see is pretty much what you get. The only thing that people don’t know is the fire that’s lit within him, because he does a really good job of masking it. But Freddie has some fire in him, especially during the games. So when he gets going and when he puts that uniform on, he still smiles but it’s a switch that turns on.”

By many accounts, Freeman is one of the nicest players in baseball and can always be seen smiling. But as Betts noted, the 35-year-old puts winning above everything else whenever he steps on the field.

Freeman put together a solid 2024 season that saw him hit .282/.378/.476 with 35 doubles, two triples, 22 home runs and 89 RBI in 147 games.

Freeman made his biggest impact in the World Series, posting a 1.364 on-base plus slugging with one triple, four home runs and 12 RBI en route to MVP honors.

That was despite Freeman playing through multiple injuries, including a right ankle sprain that required offseason surgery.

Freeman dealt with more ankle trouble last month after slipping in the shower, but that hasn’t stopped him from getting off to one of the best starts to a season in his career.

Through 30 games, Freeman is hitting a National League-best .376 with 10 doubles, one triple, nine home runs and 33 RBI. He went 4-for-4 with three extra-base hits on Mother’s Day to help the Dodgers end their road trip with a win against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
