Los Angeles Dodgers Trade For Cavan Biggio

The Los Angeles Dodgers traded Minor League pitcher Braydon Fisher to the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for Cavan Biggio, who was designated for assignment last week despite still having Minor League options available. The Dodgers also received cash considerations as part of the trade.

The presumption is Biggio, who has more than five years of Major League service time, exercised his right to reject an option to the Minors and that in turn led to being DFA’d. He last had been optioned to Triple-A Buffalo in 2022.

Biggio hit just .200/.323/.291 with four doubles, two home runs and nine RBI while appearing in 44 games for Toronto this year.

The son of Hall of Famer Craig Biggio impressed upon making his MLB debut with the Blue Jays in 2019 and followed it up with another productive season in 2020.

Cavan has otherwise failed to meet expectations since the pandemic-shortened season and fell short of forming a successful core alongside Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette.

Biggio has primarily played second base but also is capable of manning first base, third base and all three outfield spots.

How Cavan Biggio fits on Dodgers roster

In acquiring Biggio the Dodgers bring more versatility and a left-handed bat to their bench. Though, the 29-year-old largely struggled at the plate this season before getting designated for assignment by the Blue Jays.

The Biggio trade brings the Dodgers’ 40-man roster full, and he’s expected to take the place of Miguel Vargas on the active roster. While Biggio, Chris Taylor and Kiké Hernández gives the Dodgers a wealth of defensive flexibility, none of the three have done much with the bat so far this season.

Dodgers trade Braydon Fisher

Fisher was picked by the Dodgers in the fourth round of the 2018 MLB Draft. The right-hander has pitched for Double-A Tulsa and Triple-A Oklahoma City this year, going a combined 2-1 with a 5.68 ERA and 1.79 WHIP across 15 appearances.

In 134 games (12 starts) during his Minor League career, Fisher is 18-14 with a 4.53 ERA.
