Freeway Series Recap: Tyler Glasnow Strikes Out 9 But Dodgers Lose To Angels On Walk-Off

Tyler Glasnow was sharp in his final start of Spring Training but the Los Angeles Dodgers suffered a 5-4 walk-off loss to the Los Angeles Angels.

That marked the Dodgers’ first loss in four spring games against the Angels thus far, which includes matchups in Cactus League play and the exhibition Freeway Series. The teams play Tuesday for a final time before Opening Day.

Glasnow surrendered a leadoff home run to Taylor Ward in the first inning, marking the second game in a row he hit a solo blast. Glasnow otherwise collected three strikeouts in the opening frame and that was a sign of things to come.

Glasnow’s curveball was particularly effective as he finished with 10 strikeouts over five innings with just the one run allowed. He threw 73 pitches and retired 14 of the final 15 batters faced.

Heading into the outing, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said the plan was to get Glasnow to upwards of 65 pitches and potentially into the fifth inning.

Although Glasnow and the Dodgers fell into a deficit, it was short-lived as Teoscar Hernández hit a game-tying home run in the second inning. Austin Barnes’ two-run single put the Dodgers ahead in the fourth inning, and Hernández collected a second RBI in the game in the fifth on a base hit.

Anthony Banda gave up a solo home run to Mike Trout in the sixth inning, but Blake Treinen and Tanner Scott followed with scoreless appearances. Jose Rodriguez allowed a leadoff homer to Jorge Soler in the bottom of the ninth and the Angels continued to rally for a walk-off win that was aided by some Dodgers miscues.

Next for Tyler Glasnow

Because of how the Dodgers have set their rotation heading into domestic Opening Day, Glasnow is not expected to make his regular season debut until Monday in the series opener against the Atlanta Braves.
