As a primer of sorts for Vin Scully Weekend, the Los Angeles Dodgers distributed a Vin Scully bobblehead to the first 40,000 fans in attendance for Tuesday’s game against the San Francisco Giants.
As a special tribute to Scully prior to the game, the Dodgers played a video that featured current and former players discussing what the Hall of Fame announcer has meant to them. Clayton Kershaw, Justin Turner and Maury Wills were among those to share a heartfelt message.
The video ended a standing ovation from those in attendance and a live shot of Scully in his broadcast booth showing his appreciation for the kind gesture.
The 53,621 announced attendance was the largest regular-season crowd for a Major League game since Aug. 30, 2012 — the first Vin Scully bobblehead.
While Scully has remained consistent in his message that he not become the focal point of any ceremonies or a farewell tour, the 88-year-old has graciously accepted every honor bestowed on him.
The Dodgers are holding a special pregame ceremony prior to Friday’s game, with Jaime Jarrín, MLB commissioner Rob Manfred, Dodgers chairman Mark Walter and Hall of Famer Sandy Koufax among those scheduled to speak.
The tribute begins at 6:30 p.m. and will be broadcast by SportsNet LA, KTLA and AM 570 LA Sports Radio. What’s more, a dedication letter from Scully will be distributed to the first 50,000 fans in attendance.
