Dodgers Free Agency Rumors: Tyler Anderson Receives Qualifying Offer For 2023

Coinciding with the start of free agency was the Los Angeles Dodgers needing to decide which of their eligible players would be extended a qualifying offer for the 2023 season.

Trea Turner was a consensus lock to receive it, and that sentiment largely applied to fellow Dodgers free agent Tyler Anderson as well. Clayton Kershaw figured to be another candidate for the qualifying offer, but the Dodgers are mindful of not placing any sort of timeline on their longtime ace.

The 2023 qualifying offer is valued at $19.65 million, an increase from this year’s $18.9 million salary. The system has been in place since 2012 and seen 110 players extended a qualifying offer. Of those, just 11 have accepted the one-year pact; including Brett Anderson with the Dodgers for 2016, and Hyun-Jin Ryu for 2019.

According to Jeff Passan of ESPN, the Dodgers extended a qualifying offer to Anderson:

The full qualifying offer list, per ESPN sources:

– Aaron Judge
– Trea Turner
– Xander Bogaerts
– Jacob DeGrom
– Dansby Swanson
– Carlos Rodón
– Brandon Nimmo
– Willson Contreras
– Chris Bassitt
– Anthony Rizzo
– Tyler Anderson
– Martín Perez
– Joc Pederson
– Nathan Eovaldi

Anderson made his way into becoming a qualifying offer candidate behind a first career All-Star season. Although a starter by trade, he signed with the Dodgers during Spring Training without any assurances of a guaranteed role.

Anderson began the season in the bullpen but was quickly needed in the rotation because of an injury to Andrew Heaney. Both because of performance and subsequent injuries, it wound up being a spot Anderson never relinquished.

He finished the year 15-5 with a 2.57 ERA, 3.31 FIP and 1.00 WHIP over 30 games (28 starts). He set career-best marks in wins, ERA, ERA+ (163), WHIP and strikeout to walk ratio (4.06).

Will Tyler Anderson accept qualifying offer from Dodgers?

Some believe the 32-year-old is likely to take the one-year contract with the Dodgers and test free agency again next winter. However, Anderson could just as well parlay the best season of his career into a multi-year deal — perhaps even with the Dodgers.
