The Los Angeles Dodgers were purchased by Guggenheim Baseball Management in 2012, a group headed that consisted of principle owner Mark Walter, team president and CEO Stan Kasten, and part-owners Todd Boehly, Peter Guber, Magic Johnson and Bobby Patton.

Of the aforementioned investors, Johnson arguably is the most prominent name. He enjoyed a Hall of Fame career with the Los Angeles Lakers and later spent two years as the franchise’s president of basketball operations.

Johnson remains active in the sports world, as in addition to being a part-owner of the Dodgers, he has a minority stake in the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks, as well as other football and basketball franchises in SimWin Sports.

According to Scott Soshnick and Eben Novy-Williams of Sportico, Johnson is now making a strong push to buy the NFL’s Washington Commanders as part of a group being led by Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Devils co-owner Josh Harris:

Earvin “Magic” Johnson has joined the bidding for the Washington Commanders as part of a group led by 76ers and Devils co-owner Josh Harris, according multiple people familiar with negotiations.

Johnson and Harris previously attempted to purchase the Denver Broncos when they went up for sale last year, but lost out to the Walton-Penner family ownership group, who bought the franchise for a record $4.65 billion.

Along with Johnson, it was reported this past January that another Dodgers part-owner in Boehly joined the bidding for the Commanders. Boehly grew up in Bethesda, Maryland and currently has a net worth of $5.3 billion.

Boehly, along with Clearlake Capital partners Behdad Eghbali and Jose E. Feliciano reportedly had a deal in place to purchase minority ownership stakes in the Commanders last year, but it was vetoed by controversial owner Daniel Snyder.

Mookie Betts wanted to be Magic Johnson of ‘Dream Team’ for Team USA

The Team USA roster drew comparisons to the 1992 United States men’s Olympic basketball basketball team, dubbed the “Dream Team,” which took home the gold medal during the summer games in Barcelona.

Mookie Betts was part of the star-studded group and said he wanted to be the Johnson of Team USA. The United States advanced to the 2023 World Baseball Classic championship game but fell 3-2 to Japan.
