Dodgers News: Dustin May Blames Run-Scoring Inning On ‘Being Boneheaded’

The Los Angeles Dodgers opened their first road trip of the regular season with a 5-2 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field, led by another quality start from Dustin May.

The right-hander limited the Diamondbacks to just one run on two hits in six innings of work, striking out five and walking two. It was May’s second consecutive start against Arizona as he held them without a run in seven innings at Dodger Stadium last week.

With another stellar outing to begin his 2023 campaign, May explained that he kept the same approach from his last time facing the Diamondbacks, via SportsNet LA:

“We kind of took it as the same as last time. Same game plan and kind of stayed the course throughout the game. Just left a cutter kind of middle to Rojas in the sixth, and he took advantage of it.”

May was untouchable for the majority of Thursday’s start against the Diamondbacks as he gave up a two-out single to Jake McCarthy in the second inning and then did not allow another hit until Josh Rojas’ RBI double in the sixth.

The Dodgers sent six batters to the plate in the top half of the inning, and May blamed himself for not staying warm that led to the Diamondbacks scoring their only run of the game:

“The long hitting inning kind of caught up with me. I didn’t really do anything between innings to stay warm. I was just being boneheaded about it. That’s my bad. The next time I’ll be ready.”

While May was critical of himself, he undoubtedly has gotten off to an excellent start this season. In two starts, he is 1-0 with a minuscule 0.69 ERA, 2.54 FIP and 0.62 WHIP across 13 innings pitched.

Dustin May continues trend for Dodgers starters

May completing six innings against the Diamondbacks marked the sixth time in seven games this season that a Dodgers starting pitcher has reached the threshold.

The only exception is Michael Grove, who pitched through illness in his 2023 debut.
