Dodgers Injury Updates: J.D. Martinez, Joe Kelly & Shelby Miller

The Los Angeles Dodgers have been bit by the injury bug of late, but still hope to get the likes of J.D. Martinez, Joe Kelly and Shelby Miller back in time for the postseason.

The same applies to Yency Almonte, who was placed on the 15-day injury list earlier this month with a right knee sprain. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts previously expressed hope that Almonte wouldn’t be sidelined for much more than the minimum amount of time, but he may end up missing around one month.

Meanwhile, Walker Buehler and Blake Treinen remain on the 60-day IL. While Buehler has his sights set on rejoining the Dodgers in September, Treinen is more of a long shot to return despite recently joining Triple-A Oklahoma City for his rehab assignment.

J.D. Martinez update

Martinez swung a bat for the first time since being placed on the 10-day IL due to left groin tightness and will soon begin a brief rehab assignment with OKC before potentially rejoining the Dodgers next week.

“J.D. is going to take swings [Wednesday], [Thursday] he’s going to take swings on the field with the guys and then I think he’s going to do a two-day rehab with the OKC team,” Roberts said. “If that goes well, he’s expected to join us in D.C.”

Roberts added that Martinez hasn’t experienced any setbacks, but is yet to truly test his injury.

Joe Kelly

Kelly threw from flat ground on Wednesday and is scheduled to throw a bullpen session this weekend. If all goes well, he could throw another bullpen on Tuesday at a site still to be determined.

“Joe threw a ‘pen [Tuesday], which went well,” Roberts began. “He’s got another ‘pen on Friday and then I think our expectation is probably Tuesday he’ll do a simulated game or something like that. We’ll see where it goes, but everything I’ve heard has been really good.”

Roberts previously indicated that Kelly may not be fully healthy again this season, but wants to see how he fares in upcoming bullpen sessions before determining how to use him going forward.

“It went well. He’s still not 100% but he came out of it feeling good,” Roberts said of how Kelly came out of his latest bullpen session. “So I think Friday he’ll use his entire pitch mix, and I think at that point we’ll know more about how aggressive to use him.”

Shelby Miller

Miller completed his rehab assignment with the Arizona Complex League (ACL) Dodgers and Oklahoma City, and could soon rejoin the big league roster. “Shelby made his last appearance for OKC,” Roberts said. “The plan is for him to be here. He’s en route and we haven’t decided on when the activation is.”

Kelly was in the Dodgers clubhouse following their sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Roberts suggested the Dodgers may wait to activate Miller until rosters expand on September 1.
