As the Los Angeles Dodgers faced a pressing need for pitching depth last season they signed Shane Greene after he was designated for assignment and subsequently released by the Atlanta Braves upon clearing waivers.

Greene had success in 2019 and 2020, but remained a free agent until re-signing with Atlanta on a one-year contract last May. He reported to Triple-A Gwinnett to build up arm strength before joining the Braves’ active roster in June.

Greene pitched to an 8.47 ERA, 6.77 FIP and 1.82 WHIP over 19 relief appearances, which led to being released. He saw marginal improvement with L.A., posting a 4.05 ERA, 6.62 FIP and 1.20 WHIP in 6.2 innings pitched (nine appearances).

The Dodgers designated the right-hander for assignment as a corresponding move to activating AJ Pollock off the 10-day injured list, and he didn’t pitch again that season. However, Greene has now re-signed with the Dodgers on a Minor League contract, per Jon Heyman of MLB Network:

In 28 games between the Braves and Dodgers last season, Greene went 0-1 with a 7.23 ERA, 6.72 FIP and 1.65 WHIP across 23.2 innings pitched.

While Greene’s time with the organization was brief, he was hopeful and excited for an opportunity to help the Dodgers repeat as World Series champions.

“This clubhouse has got a lot of big names in it, but very humble players. I feel like part of the family right away,” Greene said at the time of signing. “It’s been really easy really fast. I’m looking forward to trying to win a World Series.”

Dodgers free agency signings

Along with Greene, and including other deals not yet finalized by the team and those made official, the Dodgers have signed Clayton Kershaw, Jake Lamb, Mike Wright, Reyes Moronta, Jimmy Nelson, Yency Almonte and Hanser Alberto over the past week.

Greene is the Dodgers’ 26th non-roster invitee to Spring Training and overall their 66th player in big league camp.
