Dodgers Claim P.J. Conlon Off Waivers From Mets, Transfer Hyun-Jin Ryu to 60-Day Disabled List

The Los Angeles Dodgers claimed left-handed pitcher P.J. Conlon off waivers from the New York Mets on Saturday and assigned him to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

As a corresponding move to put Conlon on the 40-man roster, Hyun-Jin Ryu was transferred to the 60-day disabled list. This does not change Ryu’s recovery timetable from his groin injury as he is still expected to be back around the All-Star break.

Conlon was a 13th round draft pick of the Mets out of the University of San Diego in 2015. The 24-year-old is from Belfast, Ireland and is the first Irish born player in the Major Leagues since the early 1900s.

He made his Major League debut with the Mets earlier this season, although he has not fared well in his first two big league starts. In 5.2 innings, he has given up 12 hits and seven runs (11.12 ERA), while striking out and walking two.

He has not pitched much better at the Minor League level this season either. In eight starts with Triple-A Las Vegas, he is 2-3 with A 6.58 ERA AND 1.54 WHIP with 33 strikeouts compared to 10 walks in 39.2 innings.

The crafty southpaw had a solid 2017 campaign with Double-A Birmingham though, posting a 3.38 ERA and 1.24 WHIP in 136 innings. He was even better in 2016 when he had a 1.65 ERA and 0.98 WHIP in 142 innings across two levels.

Conlon has both started and pitched out of the bullpen in his career, and with the Dodgers pitching staff currently being depleted by injuries, he should provide some much-needed organizational depth.
