Athletics All-Star Brent Rooker and New York Yankees All-Star Jazz Chisholm Jr. were added to the group of 2025 Home Run Derby participants, bringing the field complete with all eight confirmed players.
“Competing in the Home Run Derby has always been a dream of mine,” Rooker wrote in the caption of his announcement on Instagram. “Can’t wait to make it happen next week in Atlanta! See ya there!
Rooker was named among the American League reserve players for his second career All-Star Game selection. He’s participating in the Home Run Derby for the first time as a Major League player.
Rooker took part in several such events while attending Mississippi State, including the College Home Run Derby that was held in Omaha during the College World Series in 2016.
The 30-year-old is becoming the 10th player in A’s franchise history to partake in the annual event. Overall, he’s going to mark the 16th appearance by an Athletics player in the Home Run Derby.
That ranks third-most among all teams in MLB history, trailing the Baltimore Orioles (18) and Toronto Blue Jays (17).
Jose Canseco (1986, 1990), Mark McGwire (1987, 1990, 1992, 1996, 1997), Ruben Sierra (1994), John Jaha (1999), Jason Giambi (2001), Yoenis Céspedes (2013, 2014), Josh Donaldson (2014), Matt Chapman (2019) and Matt Olson (2021) are other A’s players who have participated in the Home Run Derby.
Of that group, only McGwire (1992) and Céspedes (2013, 2014) have won the Home Run Derby. If Rooker is victories this year, the A’s having four Home Run Derby winners would tie with the Yankees for most in the event’s history.
Chisholm also is competing in the Derby for the first time in his career. He becomes the seventh different Yankees hitter to participate in the Derby, and the franchise’s 10th appearance.
Chisholm joins Tino Martinez (1997), Jason Giambi (2002, 2003), Nick Swisher (2010), Robinson Canó (2011, 2013), Aaron Judge (2017) and Gary Sánchez (2017) as Yankees to participate in the event.
Martinez, Giambi (2002), Canó (2011) and Judge are the Yankees who have won the Home Run Derby.
