The New York Yankees signed former Los Angeles Dodgers relief pitcher Shane Greene to a Minor League contract and optioned him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

It marks a homecoming for the 33-year-old as he was selected in the 15th round of the 2009 MLB Draft by the Yankees. Greene went 5-4 with a 3.78 ERA, 3.73 FIP and 1.40 WHIP during his only season in the Bronx in 2014 (15 games, 14 starts).

During the 2014 offseason, the Yankees traded Greene to the Detroit Tigers as part of a three-team deal that included the Arizona Diamondbacks. The trade also saw Didi Gregorius and Robbie Ray swap uniforms.

Greene spent parts of the next five seasons with the Tigers and was an All-Star in 2019. He was traded to the Atlanta Braves at the deadline that year and remained with the organization until being designated for assignment in August 2021.

Greene then signed a Minor League contract with the Dodgers and pitched to a 4.05 ERA, 6.62 FIP and 1.20 WHIP in 6.2 innings before getting DFA’d in late September.

Greene re-signed with the Dodgers on a Minor League contract in March, and despite struggling with Triple-A Oklahoma City to begin the 2022 campaign, had his contract selected earlier this month.

Greene threw two scoreless innings in his lone appearance before getting DFA’d to make room for David Price on the active and 40-man rosters.

Greene hoped to help Dodgers repeat as World Series champions

When Greene first joined the Dodgers last season, he was hopeful and excited for an opportunity to help them repeat as World Series champions.

“This clubhouse has got a lot of big names in it, but very humble players. I feel like part of the family right away,” Greene said at the time of signing. “It’s been really easy really fast. I’m looking forward to trying to win a World Series.”
