Stan Kasten: Dodgers’ White House Visit ‘Has Nothing To Do With Politics’

The morality of the Los Angeles Dodgers’ decision to accept President Trump’s invitation to the White House in keeping with tradition for championship-winning teams has been a subject of debate recently.

The direction the Trump administration is moving the country toward is a hot-button topic, centered around the economic and societal effects for many Americans. Among the changes is a policy against any mention of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI).

That has involved the legacy of Jackie Robinson, who represents the best of what the Dodgers organization, Major League Baseball and the United States stands for.

It began with a story on Robinson’s military service being removed by the Department of Defense in the middle of March, though it was restored soon after. More recently, a Robinson biography was among many books flagged for potential removal from United States Naval Academy’s Nimitz Library.

Despite the politically charged attempts to diminish the legacy of a franchise icon by the current administration, team president and CEO Stan Kasten does not believe the Dodgers’ decision to follow through on the White House visit should be viewed through a political lens, according to Dylan Hernández of the L.A. Times:

“Asked about the discrepancy in the values promoted by his franchise and the Trump administration, Kasten replied, “This [has] nothing to do with politics. For everyone in this room, this is about what they get as their reward for being world champions, getting to the White House. I think there are probably people in this room who have different points of view on politics. No one thought this trip is about politics, it’s about celebrating their world championship.”

Kasten did acknowledge regardless of the Dodgers’ decision on a White House trip, opinion would be split, much like with the politics of the nation:

“Either way,” Kasten said. “Whenever there’s politics involved, there’s approximately half of the fan base that feels one way and half that feels the other way. That’s everywhere. That’s how we are on political issues. We didn’t view it through a political prism. We viewed it through the reward that all of these players have spent their lives trying to achieve, and they deserve it and they wanted to do it.”

Kasten additionally claimed the entire Dodgers clubhouse reached a unanimous agreement on celebrating their 2024 World Series title with the traditional visit with the President of the United States.

The Dodgers are going to the White House on April 7, along with some members of the organization due to visit Capitol Hill on April 8.

Mookie Betts decision on Dodgers’ trip to White House

After discussing the matter privately with his family, Mookie Bettes appears to have reached a decision about his participation in the Dodgers’ White House visit. While Betts has seemingly made up his mind, he is not ready to let his decision to be known publicly as of now.
