Recap: Dodgers Offense Unable to Solve Jacob deGrom in Loss To Mets

The Los Angeles Dodgers became the latest club to struggle against New York Mets ace Jacob deGrom in a 2-1 loss that tied the season series between the two clubs at three wins each.

The game was a pitcher’s duel between deGrom and Tyler Anderson throughout the night with both pitchers throwing seven strong innings.

However, the Mets broke through in the third inning, which started when Brandon Nimmo singled with two outs. That was followed by Starling Marte blasting a 1-0 changeup over the fence for his second home run in as many days to put the Mets up 2-0.

New York then followed with back-to-back singles from Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso, but Anderson got Darin Ruf to fly out to end the inning.

deGrom took a no-hitter into the fifth inning before it was broken up by Justin Turner with a one-out single, but the Dodgers were unable to capitalize on their first hit.

They finally got on the board in the sixth inning when Mookie Betts hit his 32nd home run of the season to cut the Mets’ lead in half. For Betts, it was the 32nd homer of his season, which ties the career-high mark he set in 2018 during his American League MVP season and continued his strong ending to August.

The Dodgers nearly tied the game in the seventh inning when Turner drove the ball to center field, but just as it was about to clear the wall, Nimmo made a leaping catch to rob it and keep the Mets’ lead at one.

Following deGrom, the Mets turned to Adam Ottavino and Edwin Díaz, who each pitched a scoreless inning to secure the victory. Jake Reed pitched a scoreless eighth inning for the Dodgers.

Dave Roberts manages 1,000th game with Dodgers

Dave Roberts joined the Dodgers as their manager prior to the 2016 season and following Wednesday’s game against the Mets, he has now managed the club for 1,000 games in his career.

In the seven seasons with the Dodgers, Roberts has led the club to a 632-368 record. This gives him a .632 winning percentage, which ranks as the top among all active managers and fourth all time.

Roberts did manage one game with the San Diego Padres in 2015 during a loss.
