Recap: Dodgers Outhit Diamondbacks, But 5 Double Plays Lead To Loss

The Los Angeles Dodgers again took an early lead and outhit the Arizona Diamondbacks, but that wasn’t enough in a 5-3 loss.

One night removed from tying Mike Piazza’s National League record for the fewest game as a catcher to hit 50 career home runs, Will Smith provided the Dodgers with an early lead in the first inning by delivering a three-run double.

That held until Gonsolin got a little shaky in the third inning, which was compounded by a Gavin Lux throwing error. After a leadoff single and walk put two on with nobody out, Lux cleanly fielded a hard-hit grounder but threw wide of first base for a two-run error.

Pavin Smith then tied the game with an RBI single before Gonsolin could record an out. He managed to keep the game tied, but needed 33 pitches to get through the inning.

Gonsolin wound up completing just five innings and although his offspeed pitches were sharp early, they waned as the outing progressed and so too did fastball velocity.

The Dodgers continued to have runners reach throughout the game but couldn’t get out of their own way. Back-to-back singles from Chris Taylor and Gavin Lux in the second inning didn’t amount to anything, and overall L.A. hit into five double plays.

One of which came when Taylor appeared to either lose track of the number of outs or misread a line drive off Mookie Betts’ bat. David Peralta made a relatively routine catch in left field and doubled up Taylor at second base to end the seventh inning.

It was the second time Taylor ran into an out on the bases during the current road trip.

When a Freddie Freeman bloop single, Justin Turner double and Max Muncy intentional walk loaded the bases in the eighth inning, Smith grounded into a double play to end the threat.

The missed opportunities caught up to the Dodgers in the eighth inning when Brusdar Graterol struggled with command and gave up a game-winning, two-run home run to Peralta.

Peralta finished with two of the Diamondbacks’ four hits, which were fewer than the Dodgers’ nine.

Dodgers looking for winning road trip

Tuesday’s loss has the Dodgers facing the prospect of a .500 road trip and not winning their first series since dropping two of three to the Colorado Rockies to begin the season.
