Despite needing multiple comebacks in the game, the Los Angeles Dodgers came away with a 7-6 win against the Boston Red Sox.
Tied 6-6 in the 11th inning, the Dodgers walked off with a single from Will Smith. They loaded the bases after walks to Chris Taylor and Shohei Ohtani, along with the ghost runner to start the inning.
The two teams were in a pitcher’s duel for the first four innings as Justin Wrobleski and Brayan Bello both started their outings with four strong innings.
The only run was up until the fifth inning was a solo home run by Gavin Lux in the second inning, but the runs started to come across in the fifth inning and beyond.
Wrobleski was removed from the game after 4.1 innings, turning in his best start overall at the Major League level. The southpaw allowed no runs on just three hits while striking out five, setting his new career-high after four in each of his first two outings.
He was replaced by Yohan Ramírez, who promptly allowed three straight hits that put the Red Sox up 2-1.
Ramírez gave up two straight singles to the first two batters he faced before giving up a double to Jarren Duran, who has been locked in at the plate and giving the Dodgers a lot of trouble this series. Ramírez has now allowed runs in three straight games and his season ERA sits at 5.02 in 43 innings.
In the sixth, the Dodgers worked back to tie the game when Teoscar Hernández singled home Shohei Ohtani after he doubled and Freddie Freeman worked a walk. A sacrifice fly from Andy Pages gave the Dodgers a 3-2 lead.
However, the Red Sox re-took their lead in the seventh when Duran walked against Anthony Banda and Tyler O’Neill followed with a two-run homer. The results were almost worse than that when Banda allowed a fly ball to center field, but James Outman took away extra bases while crashing into the wall.
The Dodgers had a great chance to tie the game, or even take the lead in the eighth inning, but failed to come through. The rally was started by a pair of singles from Freeman and Hernández before Pages worked a walk to load the bases.
But in a 2-0 count, Miguel Rojas checked his swing but ended up hitting a weak grounder that turned into a double play, ending the inning.
Kenley Jansen attempted to close the game out with a 4-3 lead in the ninth inning, blew the save when he allowed a home run to Kiké Hernández. The Dodgers put two more runners on after a double from Chris Taylor, but were unable to take the lead, sending it to extra innings.
Evan Phillips entered the game and gave up a two-run homer to O’Neill, his second of the game, putting Boston up by two runs.
Andy Pages doubled home the ghost runner to put the Dodgers back down by one run, and Kiké Hernández came through once again with a game-tying single that sent them to the 11th inning.
Blake Treinen worked a scoreless 11th inning.
Dodgers go for sweep on Sunday
The Dodgers now have a chance to sweep the series against the Red Sox on Sunday. It won’t be easy as the Red Sox send Kutter Crawford to the mound, and he has been having a phenomenal season.
The Dodgers counter with James Paxton, who has been having mixed results during the year with some solid games mixed in with some poor games.
