Miami Marlins Hire Former Los Angeles Dodgers Head Athletic Trainer Stan Conte

The Miami Marlins announced the hiring of Stan Conte as their senior director of medical services, among other additions to their staff. For Conte, it marks a return to Major League Baseball after resigning from the Los Angeles Dodgers in October 2015.

“I want to thank the Dodger organization and specifically each and every one of the dedicated medical staff for their support these last nine seasons in Los Angeles,” Conte said in a statement. “My resignation will allow me to focus on my research in baseball injury analytics as I remain committed to determining the causes and effects of various baseball injuries.”

Conte spent 15 seasons with the San Francisco Giants, the last seven of which Conte served as the Giants’ head athletic trainer and physical therapist. He then reunited with Ned Colletti in October 2006 when the Dodgers hired him as director of medical services and head athletic trainer.

Conte was promoted in 2011 to senior director of medical services in 2011, and vice president medical services before to the 2013 season.

While his final season with the Dodgers was marred by injury — the team lost 1,196 games due to injury, which was second-highest in the National League — Conte was also head of their medical staff during noteworthy accomplishments.

In 2008, Takashi Saito returned from a right elbow injury for the postseason due to a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection. The Dodgers were believed to be the first baseball team to use that procedure, which now is common for pitchers.

In 2013, Zack Greinke returned from a fractured collarbone earlier than anticipated because of an aggressive surgery that called for a metal plate to be inserted.

Dodgers training staff promotions

As part of multiple moves within their baseball operations department, the Dodgers promoted Brandon McDaniel to vice president of player performance, and Thomas Albert to head athletic trainer.

McDaniel is entering his 10th season at the Major League level with the Dodgers. He previously was their director of player performance from 2019-2021, which came after a stint as head strength and conditioning coach (2014-2018), and strength and conditioning coach (2013).

Albert, who is entering his 11th season in professional baseball, spent the past six (2016-2021) as the Dodgers’ assistant athletic trainer.
