The Los Angeles Dodgers winning their first World Series since 1988 was overshadowed a bit by Justin Turner being removed from Game 6 in the seventh inning without explanation.

Shortly after the final out was recorded, it was revealed that Turner had tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19). He remained in a doctor’s office as the Dodgers rushed the field to celebrate their title.

Turner later joined his teammates and was part of the final team photo of 2020. However, his absence on the field during the immediate moments of the celebration did not go unnoticed.

Kiké Hernandez explained that it was challenging to celebrate the Dodgers’ World Series title without Turner on the field, as told by Jorge Castillo of the L.A. Times:

“It was a difficult situation. I had dreamed about different scenarios and what it would be like to win the World Series. In every scenario, I saw myself running to J.T. to hug him. J.T. has been one of my closest friends on the team. He’s our leader, our captain. It was difficult. We all were asking, ‘Where’s J.T.?’”

Turner rejoining his Dodgers teammates on the field prompted an MLB investigation, although it concluded with no punishment being dished out. “I was under the impression that team officials did not object to my returning to the field for a picture with my wife,” Turner said in a statement.

“However, what was intended to be a photo capturing the two of us turned into several greetings and photos where I briefly and unwisely removed my mask. In hindsight, I should have waited until the field was clear of others to take that photo with my wife.”

Turner healthy, excited for ‘all the celebrations to come’

Two weeks after the Dodgers’ Game 6 win, Turner made an appearance on SportsNetLA’s “This Is Our Year” special and said he had fully recovered from the virus.

Turner also added that he is looking forward to celebrating the team’s World Series title when the public health situation improves. A parade hasn’t been finalized yet, but one possible site is Griffith Park, and festivities could expand to include the L.A. Lakers.
