Already the Los Angeles Dodgers record holder, Freddie Freeman hit his 53rd double of the season to a break a tie with Johnny Frederick and take sole possession for most in franchise history.

Frederick finished with 52 doubles with the Brooklyn Dodgers during the 1929 season. Freeman’s 50th double broke the L.A. Dodgers record, which belonged to Shawn Green.

The seven-time All-Star is on pace to exceed 60 doubles this year. Freeman’s previous career high was 47 doubles hit in his first season with the Dodgers.

Joe Medwick, who spent parts of five seasons with Brooklyn, holds the National League record of 64 doubles, which he set in 1936 as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals. Earl Webb holds the MLB record for most doubles in a single season with 67 as a member of the 1931 Boston Red Sox.

Freeman hit 16 doubles in August, which was his second-highest total for any month this season. The 33-year recorded a franchise-record 17 doubles in May en route to being named NL Player of the Month.

Despite coming off a stellar month, the first week-plus of September had been a slower stretch for the 33-year-old and Dodgers as a whole. Freeman had a modest showing against his former Atlanta Braves teammates and went a combined 2-for-9 with two one extra-base hit, two RBI and two walks in the series with the Miami Marlins.

Freddie Freeman milestones

Along with taking hold of the Dodgers record for most doubles, this season also saw Freeman reach 2,000 career hits. He accomplished the feat at Dodger Stadium, with family members in attendance.

“Just eeing how happy my dad, my stepmom, my wife and my kids were for me, just makes it special. Obviously the fans have embraced my family and I since the day we got here,” Freeman said at the time. “They made another special memory for the Freeman family again. Dodgers fans, they never disappoint.

“Another special day and one I’ll never forget. Took long enough, but glad it happened at home.”

Freeman also became the first Dodgers player to reach 100 hits, 50 RBI and 10 stolen bases before July since RBI was first tracked in 1920.
