The Los Angeles Dodgers addressed their bullpen by adding All-Star closer Edwin Díaz on a three-year, $69 million contract that includes more than $13 million in deferrals and a $9 million signing bonus.
The $23 million average annual value (AAV) of the contract set a new record for relievers, surpassing the $20.4 million mark Díaz received in his last deal with the New York Mets.
The right-hander’s contract also includes a conditional option for 2029 that the Dodgers can exercise if Díaz spends a certain amount of time on the injured list.
According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Díaz’s potential option year is worth $6.5 million and includes incentives based on the number of games he finishes:

The Dodgers are obviously hoping they won’t have to decide on picking up Díaz’s potential option in 2029 as it would mean he was sidelined for a chunk of any given season with the team.
Díaz, who is expected to the Dodgers’ dedicated closer, collected 28 saves to go along with a 1.63 ERA and 98 strikeouts this past season for the Mets.
He earned a third career All-Star Game selection and was voted the Trevor Hoffman National League Reliever of the Year for a second time.
Dodgers ‘fired up’ over Edwin Díaz signing
In addition to being one of baseball’s best closers, Díaz brings with him one of the most exciting entrances in baseball, headlined with the song “Narco” by Blasterjaxx and Timmy Trumpet.
“Yeah, we’re fired up,” Tommy Edman said of the Dodgers’ reaction to signing Díaz. “He’s been my answer to the question, ‘Who’s the toughest pitcher you’ve had to face?’ So I’m really glad I don’t have to face him anymore.
“I’m excited to see his walkout at Dodger Stadium. It’s always one of the cool walkouts for an opposing team. So it’ll be pretty awesome to see it here.”
