Dodgers Roster: Jimmie Sherfy Activated, Zach Reks Optioned To Oklahoma City

The Los Angeles Dodgers optioned outfielder Zach Reks to Triple-A Oklahoma City ahead of the series opener against the Colorado Rockies in order to place Jimmie Sherfy on the active roster after he was claimed off waivers earlier in the week.

Reks was called up for two games leading into the All-Star break, and in those contests he went 0-for-2 but scored one run in each. In three total games at the Major League level this season, Reks is hitless in four plate appearances.

Sherfy was designated for assignment by the San Francisco Giants on July 6 and nearly fell through the cracks of waivers. After making it through 13 of the 14 teams in the National League, the Dodgers swooped him up before the Giants could send the right-hander to the Minors.

Sherfy started the season strong, allowing no earned runs through his first seven innings over six separate appearances. In each of his last two performances, however, the righty allowed two earned runs in one inning. These two less-than-ideal outings brought his season ERA up to 4.22, and despite his strong start, the Giants evidently felt they had seen enough.

Sherfy had faced the Dodgers once this season while in San Francisco, managing two outs without allowing a hit at Dodger Stadium on June 28.

The Dodgers will serve as Sherfy’s third NL West club in as many years. Prior to playing for the Giants, he had spent the previous three seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Sherfy provides much-needed pitching help

The Dodgers’ pitching has been a huge vulnerability for them as of late. The starting rotation is hurting from Clayton Kershaw’s placement on the 10-day injured list and Trevor Bauer’s extended administrative leave, and the bullpen is dealing with a plethora of injuries as well.

Victor Gonzalez, Jimmy Nelson, Edwin Uceta and Corey Knebel are all currently on the IL, the last of whom has missed nearly the entire season due to a lat strain.

Sherfy’s activation brings a much-needed arm to a bullpen that crawled to the finish line as the All-Star break approached. Now, he joins the Dodgers in a race for first place against the very team he suited up for less than a month ago
