Dodgers Plan To Be ‘Fluid’ With Starters At Second Base & Center Field

The Los Angeles Dodgers spent Spring Training evaluating their options at second base and center field, with manager Dave Roberts acknowledging the positions are intertwined because of various options at both.

In somewhat of a surprise, Tommy Edman was the primary second baseman throughout Cactus League play despite indications during the offseason being he would play center field.

Andy Pages often found himself in center field, and so too did James Outman. The Dodgers also began to mix in Hyeseong Kim in center field.

For the regular season, the Dodgers had Edman at second base and Pages playing center field in both games of the Tokyo Series.

Edman’s positional versatility allows the Dodgers to move him between second base, center field and any other position they ask, which makes him an everyday player even if it may not come at a set position.

“I think it’s just going to remain fluid,” manager Dave Roberts said of the Dodgers’ plan at second base and center field.

“I think that’s a position where we have different players that can play second base, can play center field. So it’s not going to be one certain situation versus left, versus right. I think just kind of rotating Tommy, Kiké and Miggy Ro at second base.

“Tommy center field, Andy in center field. It’s going to remain fluid. I think each of those guys are going to play between three and call it, five days. Outside of Tommy, who is essentially an everyday guy.”

The Dodgers were hoping that Kim could fill the void they created at second base with the offseason trade of Gavin Lux, but the rookie will be starting the season in Triple-A Oklahoma City after struggling in Spring Training.

While Kim will likely be given another shot to secure the starting job at some point this season, Edman will be one of the primary options to hold down the fort in the meantime.

Dodgers versatility

Along with Edman, Pages is also capable of playing multiple positions. He’s more of a natural corner outfielder, but has drawn praise from Roberts and teammates for his continued work at improving in center field.

Furthermore, Miguel Rojas is another option to play second base or shortstop, as is Kiké Hernández, along with third base and the outfield.
