Julio Urías Arrested: Court Date Scheduled

Julio Urías was arrested by the Los Angeles Police Department late Sunday night for felony domestic violence, casting doubt on his future with the Los Angeles Dodgers and in Major League Baseball.

The incident was believed to have occurred after a soccer game between the Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) and Inter Miami at BMO Stadium, which drew national attention because of Lionel Messi. Urías was released Monday morning on a $50,000 bond and has a court date set for September 27, according to his booking records.

At that point the Dodgers would have only five games remaining on their 2023 schedule.

The left-hander was scheduled to start for the Dodgers on Thursday in Miami, but did not travel with the team. Urías almost certainly will be placed on administrative leave as MLB plans to launch an investigation into the matter.

MLB commissioner Rob Manfred may place an accused player on paid administrative leave for up to seven days while the allegations are investigated. If the investigation extends beyond a week, the leave is extended or the player is transferred to the restricted list.

Urías previously was arrested in May 2019 on suspicion of domestic battery during an incident at the Beverly Center. He was put on administrative leave amid an ongoing MLB investigation.

One month later, the Los Angeles prosecutors office announced they would not press charges against Urías under the conditions that he participate in a City Attorney hearing, commit no acts of violence against anyone, and successfully participate in and complete a 52-week domestic violence counseling program in person, and in a group setting.

MLB nonetheless suspended Urías for 20 games for violating the league’s domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse policy. He did not return to the team until September of the 2019 season.

Thus far no player has been suspended twice for violating MLB’s joint domestic policy since it was implemented in 2015. Considering Urías is a repeat offender, he figures to face a lengthy suspension that could significantly impact his career.

Urías is set to become a free agent at the conclusion of the 2023 season.

Dodgers statement on Julio Urías’ arrest

On Monday morning, the Dodgers released a brief statement regarding Urías’ arrest. “We are aware of an incident involving Julio Urías,” the team said.

“While we attempt to learn all the facts, he will not be traveling with the team. The organization has no further comment at this time.”
