Dodgers Injuries: Corey Seager Diagnosed With Right Hand Fracture

The Los Angeles Dodgers announced x-rays revealed Corey Seager sustained a fracture in his right hand as a result of being hit by a pitch. Seager was struck by a 90 mph pitch in the fifth inning of Saturday’s 7-0 win over the Miami Marlins and immediately removed from the game.

Prior to the announcement, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Seager was experiencing pain in the hand and there already swelling. Furthermore, Roberts suggested the team already had started to plan on putting Seager on the 10-day injured list.

The team did not reveal a timeline for Seager’s recovery. Typically, such an injury can take upwards of four to six weeks to heal.

Seager has played in 37 games this season, batting .265/.361/.422 with seven doubles, two triples, four home runs and 22 RBI. He began the season on a tear as the reigning National League Championship Series and World Series MVP, began to slump but had recently heated up again.

The Dodgers presumably will rely on some combination of Gavin Lux and Chris Taylor at shortstop while Seager is out. The domino effect may include Max Muncy spending more time than expected at second base, and Albert Pujols potentially assuming a larger role. Pujols reportedly agreed to a contract with the Dodgers on Saturday.

Bellinger, McKinstry on the mend

Losing Seager for a prolonged stretch is the latest injury in what’s been a trying season for the Dodgers. They still are without Cody Bellinger and Zach McKinstry, but both are nearing the start of a respective rehab assignment. Though, AJ Pollock was put on the 10-day IL Saturday because of a left hamstring strain.

On the pitching front, David Price may be activated as soon as Monday.
