The Chicago White Sox have been shopping their ace, Garrett Crochet, on the trade market for quite some time, and the Los Angeles Dodgers have been connected through the entire process.
At the 2024 trade deadline, the Dodgers were reportedly unwilling to part with Dalton Rushing and some of their other top prospects, but submitted numerous proposals. After no team met the White Sox’ high asking price, trade discussions figured to resume in the offseason.
That has been the case, and the Dodgers are once again interested in acquiring the left-handed starter. That remains true even after the Dodgers signed Blake Snell as they are still looking to add Crochet to the mix.
According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Dodgers are also among the favorites to acquire Crochet if he’s traded, which is the expectation at this point:
“Cubs trading for Crochet? Anything is possible. They have good prospects, but I wouldn’t call them the favorites. The favorites to me have been L.A., Philly, Baltimore and Boston. Now, there are other teams that are certainly going to be in on Crochet. I could see it with the Cubs. They do have the prospects to get it done and they may deal with the White Sox.”
Along with the Dodgers, the likes of the Boston Red Sox, Baltimore Orioles, New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox are among the teams that have been mentioned with a potential Crochet trade.
The White Sox reportedly are seeking a return of young position players in exchange for the 25-year-old. Crochet is under team control via arbitration through the 2026 season and is coming off a strong season.
The 2024 season was Crochet’s first as a starting pitcher after multiple years in the bullpen and a few injuries. He tossed 146 innings with a 3.58 ERA, 2.69 FIP, 12.88 strikeouts per nine, 2.03 walks per nine and 4.7 WAR.
He faltered a bit down the stretch with a 4.83 ERA in the final two months of the season, which was 1.60 points higher than his ERA from March-July, but that could likely be attributed to fatigue in his first year starting.
Do Dodgers make sense in Garrett Crochet trade?
The Dodgers would still like to add another starting pitcher, and with the free agent market getting pricey, acquiring someone like Crochet could be even more intriguing due to his team control.
The Dodgers have numerous talented prospects they could include in a deal, and they could also send some MLB players, such as Gavin Lux and James Outman in any package.
Crochet could also benefit from the six-man rotation the Dodgers are expected to use, andit would give them another high-end option for their mix.
