Former Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Matt Magill announced his retirement after playing professionally for 14 seasons.
Magill was selected by the Dodgers out of Royal High School in Simi Valley, Calif., in the 31st round of the 2008 MLB Draft. The right-hander went on to make his MLB debut with the club during the 2013 season.
After getting recalled during the final week of April that year, Magill made four starts. The last of those was his best appearance, but it was followed by being optioned back to Triple-A. Magill rejoined the Dodgers at the beginning of June, though only made two starts.
He finished 0-2 with a 6.51 ERA and 1.99 WHIP over the six starts.
The 2014 season saw Magill exclusively pitch at the Triple-A level for the Albuquerque Isotopes and he also participated in the Arizona Fall League. However, that offseason the Dodgers traded him to the Cincinnati Reds for Chris Heisey.
Tommy John surgery limited Magill during the 2015 and 2016 seasons, and he only appeared in five games during his tenure with the Reds. Signing with the San Diego Padres didn’t see the right-hander return to the Majors, which did come after joining the Minnesota Twins.
During time spent with Minnesota and the Seattle Mariners from 2018-20, Magill went a combined 8-6 with a 4.13 ERA and 1.42 WHIP over 101 relief appearances. Magill retires with his only starts at the Major League level coming for the Dodgers.
Magill, Federowicz make same decision
Earlier this offseason Tim Federowciz announced his retirement from baseball, also after playing professionally for 14 seasons.
Federowicz was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the seventh round of the 2008 MLB Draft and traded to L.A. three years later as part of a three-team deal that included the Mariners.
Over parts of four seasons with the Dodgers, Federowicz batted .194/.241/.328 with 19 doubles, 12 home runs and 39 RBI over 271 plate appearances and 89 games.
