Alex Call is one of just two active members from the Los Angeles Dodgers’ modest trade deadline and has been an important chess piece for the club in the postseason, even if he hasn’t been called upon that often.
The Dodgers’ biggest needs at the deadline were in the outfield and bullpen. Call and Brock Stewart were the only major moves made to fortify the Major League roster. Stewart was lost for the season prior to the playoffs due to season-ending right shoulder surgery.
Call was a third-round draft pick by the Chicago White Sox in the 2016 MLB Draft and made his debut in 2022. He spent parts of four seasons in the Washington Nationals organization prior to being traded to the Dodgers.
Going from a rebuilding Nationals team to a World Series contender overnight was invigorating for the 31-year-old.
“It really started right away when I got the call saying, ‘Hey, you’re going to the Dodgers.’ It’s, like, the Dodgers are the World Series favorites at this moment,” Call recently said. “So that’s what I’m envisioning in my head starting right now, really, from the time I got the call.
“I just kind of thought about it. I’m still texting my Nationals teammates and things like that. And they’re at home, and I’m here lucky to be playing postseason baseball, something that every kid dreams of doing, playing in a crazy loud stadium, a packed stadium in the playoffs. It’s really what you dream of.
“Just me and my wife, we just kind of reminisce on it at the end of the day and, like, man, this is so awesome. This is so fun. And just to have a role on a team that’s this good is also just a really special moment.
“Just from all the things I’ve been through throughout my career, grinding to just make it to the Major Leagues, and then establish myself as a Major Leaguer, and ultimately be a contributor on a World Series contender, just praise the Lord for how he’s taken care of it.”
Call has only appeared in five games this postseason. He made two starts during the National League Division Series but has otherwise appeared off the bench..
Call has quietly been productive with limited opportunities in his first postseason, reaching base seven times in 10 plate appearances.
Dave Roberts praises Alex Call’s contributions
Call collected a single upon entering Game 3 of the World Series, further validating manager Dave Roberts’s confidence in his ability to remain prepared.
“Alex, he’s a winner,” Roberts said. “He’s sort of on the periphery, but the guys love him. He’s a baseball player, he’s prepared. Whatever situation I ask of him, he’s ready. So just learning him at the deadline, he’s a great teammate and very prepared.”
